Breast Cancer Tests

Molecular abnormalities are prevalent in solid tumor formation and progression.  Molecular genetic markers for loci associated with breast, prostate, and lung tumors are routinely used for prognostication.  Other solid tumors, including soft tissue tumors, are characterized by unique molecular endpoints easily targetable by both FISH and molecular strategies.

testID Test Type Test Name Includes Description Clinical Significance Normal Ranges
31 Digital Image Analysis DNA Ploidy Consultation and report, morphometric analysis (tumor) DNA content and cell cycle analysis in solid tumors- paraffin tissue In breast cancer and other solid tumors, many studies indicate that low S-phase and diploid DNA content are associated with a relatively good prognosis. Conversely, the presence of aneuploid DNA content and a high S-phase tends to correlate with a worse prognosis. Diploid DNA content
43 FISH HER-2 / NEU Gene Amplification Probe Hybridization, Analysis, Computer Assisted Morphometric Analysis, & Interpretation The PathVysion HER-2 DNA Probe Kit is designed to detect amplification of the HER-2/neu gene via fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in human breast cancer tissue specimens. Results from the PathVysion HER-2 DNA Probe Kit are intended for use as an adjunct to existing clinical and pathologic information currently used as prognostic factors in stage II, node-positive breast cancer patients. The PathVysion HER-2 DNA Probe Kit is further indicated as an aid to predict disease-free and overall survival patients with stage II node-positive breast cancer treated with adjuvant cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin and 5-fluorouracil (CAF) chemotherapy. The determination of the presence of amplification for the HER-2/neu oncogene is based on the counting of immunofluorescent signals for LSI®HER-2/neu and CEP®17 contained within the interphase nuclei of invasive carcinoma cells. Manufacturer's guidelines for nonamplified and amplified cells are based on enumeration of 20 interphase nuclei from tumor cells per target reported as the ratio of average HER-2/neu copy number to that of CEP®17. <2.0
96 FISH Toposiomerase IIA Probe, Analysis, & Interpretation Chromosome 17 locus involved in the etiology of breast cancer. Toposiomerase IIA abnormalities are associated with a less favorable prognosis. Chromosome 17 locus involved in the etiology of breast cancer. Topoisomerase IIA abnormalities are associated with a less favorable prognosis. <5%
102 Flow Cytometry DNA Content / Ploidy Solid Tumor and Hematologic conditions DNA Analysis and proliferative phase analysis DNA content is frequently abnormal in solid tumors (breast, colorectal, prostate) and hematologic conditions (acute leukemias, myeloma)

15 IHC Breast Panel ER, PR, P53, Ki-67, HER2 & Interpretation Tumor morphometric analysis- Includes ER, PR, HER-2/neu, p53, and Ki67; can be used with FISH for HER-2/neu amplification assay Breast cancer management includes: ER/PR, HER-2/neu (FISH and IHC), p53, Ki67 (proliferation).
