Dr. Stephen M. Bonsib

Stephen Bonsib, MD

Chairman of Pathology

Director, Renal Pathology Consultative Services

Albert G. and Harriet G. Smith Professor of Pathology

Clinical Services -- Education -- Board Certifications -- Publications

I am the Pathology Chair at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Shreveport as of January, 2007.  I come to Shreveport from Indiana University, where I was the Director of Surgical Pathology, I am not new to the South having held academic appointments at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Medical College of Georgia.  I received residency training and surgical pathology training at the University of Iowa.  My renal pathology fellowship was at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan.  I have practiced as a surgical and renal pathologist for 25 years.

I have authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. I was 1 of 3 urologic pathologists from the United States invited by the WHO to Lyon, France to edit the kidney tumor section of the 2004 WHO blue book, Tumours of the Kidney and Male Genital-Urinary Tract, and authored or co-authored 5 chapters in that text. I have contributed chapters to the foremost reference textbooks in renal and urologic pathology - Chapter 1 to the just released 6th edition of Heptinstall Pathology of the Kidney, Chapter 5 to the recently published new textbook, Urologic Pathology and Chapters 1 and 3 to the soon to be released 2nd edition of Bostwick and Eble Urologic Pathology. I am currently the President of the Renal Pathology Society.

My consultative services parallel my academic interests and, therefore, include both renal pathology and urologic pathology (notably renal neoplasia). An efficient and high quality renal biopsy service is my personal priority. I have had one of the largest renal biopsy services in the country for years (previously at Indiana University – 1,100 renal biopsies/year) and will replicate that service at LSUHSC - Shreveport. The successes of my service are due to an emphasis on service with a rapid turn-around-time (light microscopy with special stains and complete immunofluorescence stains out the same day the biopsy arrives) and direct communication with the referring nephrologist (also the same day the biopsy arrives). No case is signed out without direct contact with the clinician to ensure that the diagnosis is not only correct, but is also properly focused for critical clinical questions.

The LSUHSC-Shreveport Renal Consultative Services offers consultations in renal pathology and urologic pathology (notably renal neoplasia); both represent subspecialties of diagnostic interest and academic productivity. It is our commitment that LSUHSC-Shreveport Renal Pathology Consultative Services will partner with you to provide the highest caliber service to your patients.
