The LSUHSC-S family welcomes Stephen Bonsib, M.D., as he assumes his new role as Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology.

Dr. Bonsib was recruited to LSUHSC at Shreveport from Indiana University, where he was Director of Surgical Pathology. Since last March, Pathology professor Marjorie Fowler, Ph.D., had been Interim Department Head. Dr. Fowler is Director of Anatomical Pathology.

Dr. Bonsib completed medical school at Indiana University and took his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Iowa. His fellowship training included a Renal Pathology Fellowship at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, and a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Dr. Bonsib has served in a variety of administrative capacities at several universities, including vice chairman at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and acting chair at the Medical College of Georgia. In addition, he is the current President of the Renal Pathology Society. Dr. Bonsib’s interests include medical renal diseases (renal biopsies) and urologic pathology, specifically renal neoplasia.

At LSUHSC-S, he plans to replicate the renal biopsy consultative service he provided at Indiana University which was one of the 10 largest in the country. That practice emphasized service, with diagnoses provided the day a biopsy arrives and discussion of every case with the clinician.

“It is a pleasure to join the faculty of LSUHSC. I am blessed with a marvelous faculty, dedicated to patient care and teaching and complemented by a national visibility in several academic arenas. I plan to build upon this strong foundation, bolstering the teaching and research missions by careful scrutiny of departmental activities, coupled with dialogue with the clinical services that we support. I expect to add several faculty members in areas where subspecialty expertise is needed and will emphasize growth in outreach activities capitalizing upon the numerous departmental strengths,” said Dr. Bonsib.
