Renal Tests
Kidney biopsies
- Native kidney
biopsies are processed for light microscopy, immunofluorescent
microscopy, and electron microscopy. Transplant biopsies may be
handled similarly, or only light microscopy (with or without C4d
stain) may be performed dependent upon the judgment of the
clinician.
Light
microscopy:
- Two-micron
serial sections are cut.
- Duplicate slides
stained with: Hematoxylin and eosin ,Periodic
acid-Schiff, Jones
methenamine silver, Trichrome stains.
- Unstained slides
available for: BK polyomavirus, C4d, amyloid, or other
immunohistochemical or histochemical stains as indicated.
Immunofluorescent microscopy:
- Four-micron
sections are stained with: IgG, IgA, IgM, C3, C1q, kappa, lambda,
and fibrinogen
Electron
microscopy:
-
One-micron thin
sections are reviewed
-
1-2 glomeruli
are selected for ultrastructural examination.
-
Tubulo-interstitial
or vascular structures may be examined as indicated.
Surgical consult / specimen slides
-
Submitted slides
are reviewed.
-
Wet tissue can
be processed for routine histology
-
Blocks can be
submitted for recuts or immunohistochemical and histochemical stains
as indicated
