J-1 Scholars

tiger book

J-1 Scholars sponsored by LSUHSC New Orleans (Research Scholars, Short Term Scholars and Professors) are permitted to conduct their specified regular program activity (research, teaching as outlined in their offer letter) at LSU HSC New Orleans (their J program sponsor) automatically upon obtaining J-1 status. Scholars sponsored by third parties, such as Fulbright, must have authorization for their program activity at an LSUHSC New Orleans site, which should be indicated on their DS-2019 form.

LSUHSC New Orleans is currently authorized by the Department of State to sponsor J-1 Exchange Visitors in the categories listed here. Each category has its own unique requirements and limitations.

To apply for sponsorship as a J-1 Scholar, please complete the following:

  1. Submit the J-1 Scholar Application Kit which is to be completed by the scholar.
  2. Gather all support documentation for themselves and their dependents if applicable: Foreign National Applicant Required Documents (J Status)
  3. If you are already in J-1 Scholar (Short Term Scholar, Research Scholar, Professor) status at a DOS approved Program Sponsor Institution and would like to Request Transfer of your J-1 Exchange Visitor program to LSUHSC-New Orleans, please complete the J-1 Non-Student Transfer In Form.
  4. A completed application kit and all required supporting documentation should be returned to the Department's Business Manager/Coordinator so a request can be made for International Services to issue a Form DS-2019. A DS-2019 will allow a prospective scholar (and any dependents) to apply for an entry visa at a United States Consulate abroad or, if visa exempt, admission at a Port of Entry or to request a Change of Status from USCIS.

J-1 Scholar Application (completed by sponsoring department)*Please use Adobe Reader to access electronic signature option. Electronic signatures will not display in internet browsers.*

If all requirements are met and a Form DS-2019 is issued, additional instructions on how to obtain appropriate/necessary entry documents will be provided. Those details can also be found here.

Any changes in program activity or additional activity to take place for LSUHSC New Orleans must be reported to and approved by OIS prior to commencement!!
